Critical Thinking Skill 3 is Using Experts.

Rule for Experts:

  • If an expert has qualifications then she is strong.
  • If an expert is unbiased she is strong.
  • If an expert agrees with other similar experts she is strong.
  • If an expert has no qualifications then she is weak.
  • If an expert is biased she is weak.
  • If an expert doesn’t agree with other similar experts she is weak.
  • You are the best person to decide if an expert is weak or strong.

How to use Experts

  1. First, describe your expert’s qualifications.
  2. Next, give evidence that your expert is unbiased.
  3. Then, explain your expert’s opinion.
  4. Then, explain how other qualified experts agree with your expert.
  5. Finally, explain how your expert’s opinion supports your opinion.

How to attack Experts

  • Explain how your friend’s expert is not qualified to talk about your idea.
  • Explain how friend’s expert is biased against your idea.
  • Explain how other qualified experts disagree with your friend’s expert.
  • Explain how your friend has misunderstood their expert’s idea. [all these should have links to examples]
